You want me to drink bone broth?I’ve never really liked soup, so drinking bone broth from a mug was unthinkably gross to me at first.
But just like adding a splash of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water first thing in the morning, it’s easy and inexpensive and helps me feel great. Like I tell my 4-year-old daughter when I encourage/bribe/make her finish her vegetables: |
Health Benefits of Bone Broth
|
Sometimes we have to eat things that aren’t our favorite because they’re really good for us.
I drink bone broth from a mug almost every morning. Sometimes I’ll have a second if I'm sore after a hard workout, if I feel like I’m getting sick, before or after eating in a restaurant, or if I'm just feeling "not quite right."
Chicken Bone BrothEvery couple weeks I buy a whole chicken, roast it, take all the meat off (I usually get 3-5 meals out of it) and make the rest into broth.
Put the bones and innards in a large pot or crock pot and cover with water. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar to the pot to draw the minerals out of the bones. Simmer 6-8 hours on the stove or cook on low overnight in the crock pot. I’ve tried adding vegetables and spices (basically follow any soup recipe) which adds to the health benefits, but I like it better plain. If I want to spice it up I’ll add a dash of cayenne pepper, dash of salt, and ½ tsp lemon juice to my mug right before drinking it. Beef Marrow Bone BrothBeef Marrow Bone Broth has a stronger taste than chicken broth.
The bones can be roasted first at 450 degrees on a rimmed backing sheet for about 40 minutes, flipping halfway. Transfer bones to a pot, cover with water and add the juices from the roasting pan. Simmer 6-8 hours on the stove or cook on low overnight in the crock pot. |
How To:
Strain the broth into another sauce pot and let it cool on the counter for a while then overnight in the fridge.
After it cools, the broth congeals and the fat settles at the top.
It's best to use organic, antibiotic-free, grass-fed bones. Leave the fat, it homogenizes again after it’s warmed up. If you've used conventional bones, make sure to scrape the fat off the top.
